Article Summary "Beyond Love: A Critical Race Ethnography of the Schooling of Adolescent Black Males" By Garrett Albert Duncan

Image
The issue of racism is very hotly discussed in the United States. Not only on television but also in college scientific articles. This article written by Duncan, clearly as the title implies, discusses racist issues, primarily African-American male students. Furthermore, the theory used clearly is critical race theory (CRT). source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57908808 The method used in this research is ethnography. This is clear because ethnography is written as the title of the study. Ethnography was used to find out the stories experienced by black students when they were ostracized at the research site. This study was conducted at City High School (CHS) located in the US Midwest (Duncan, 2002, p. 131). This theory is essential because Irin Marion Young in 1992 stated that marginalization is the most dangerous form of oppression (Duncan, 2002, p. 132). In this article, Duncan discusses a lot about the marginalized behavior accepted by African-American students. This co

Brainstorm for digital math storytelling

Research plans, as discussed earlier, should be conducted online. I often receive onCampus Weekly emails that one of the news is the deadline to have at least a first dose or obtain an approved exemption is Oct. 15. This clearly illustrates the increasing spread of Covid, so that the most likely option is to take data virtually. In addition, a digital math storytelling camp such as the one that was held in summer 2021 can continue for next summer. OSU digital math storytelling camp source: https://u.osu.edu/digitalmathstorytelling/summer-camp/ If it is held online, I will try to contact Indonesian community and some graduate students from Indonesia who have children with United States citizenship. I have asked Tryanti Abdulrahman for her consent to record a digital math storytelling video. She has a 4th-grade and 5th-grade elementary school daughters. Honestly, I am still wondering about outfit math video from June 28 camp; why not interview students who have recorded their video about

Pre-Write 2 Revised

Researchers need to determine in advance about the research site, such as whether the research is conducted in single-site or multiple-site research (Blommaert & Jie, 2010). After deciding the research site, the researcher needs to position himself as someone who wants to know what happened at the site. This is expressed by Heath & Street (2008, p. 17) by stating, "what ethnographers really want to know is "What is happening here in the field site(s) I have chosen?". I would like to conduct research on Batik (national costume in Indonesia) pattern made by students in Mojokerto, Indonesia. Hymes (1982, p. 23) explained the importance of cultural patterns in ethnography by writing that “one needs to find out something of the range of cultural patterning, once cultures are investigated from the new point of view”. Another reason I chose Batik is that I am an Indonesian citizen who often uses Batik in various activities. In addition, I went to school in the city of S

Ringkasan Artikel: Performativity in the Bilingual Classroom: The Plight of English Learners in the Current Reform Context; Pacheco, Mariana; University of Wisconsin - Madison

I argue that in the absence of assisted supportive guidance to facilitate success as defined in the current accountability framework, local interpretations of outcomes-based policies have

This article was very interesting because I, who had only been living in the USA for a month, had difficulty learning English. Fortunately, the friends here are very supportive and do not insult my English skills. Generally, they commented that I would be able to speak English independently because of the interaction with my classmates. Back to this article written by an academic from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, this article uses several theories, but the most widely used theory is theory from Brefenbrenner. Brefenbrenner is a psychologist who sparked the theory of ecology, namely that students learn by getting support from their environment. This can be seen from the sentence written by Pacheco (2010, p.75), namely "I argue that in the absence of assisted supportive guidance to facilitate success as defined in the current accountability framework, local interpretations of outcomes-based policies have had parallel effects on the school lives of ELs and their teachers&qu

Cognitive and Social Cognitive Theories

Knowledge understood from this theory is as stated by Aubrey & Riley (2019, p. 40) regarding Piaget's view, namely "He did not believe that a concept could be taught directly to children; rather, children must build their knowledge of a concept based on other previous experiences." With this understanding, teaching and learning activities are carried out using drilling, especially in mathematics classrooms. This is also consistent with Bandura's knowledge that students learn by imitating the behavior of others (Aubrey & Riley, 2019, p. 136). However, Aubrey & Riley (2019, p. 144) also mentions that "Bandura sets out to demonstrate how children behavior was influenced by the people around them, showing a correlation between learning theory and cognitive approaches." This shows that teaching and learning activities will be more effective if it involves social activities. In math class, more competent students can help other students to achieve bett

Conceptualization of Ethnography of Literacy and/or Language

To assist in understanding something that is still considered abstract or difficult to understand, it is easier to use an analogy. In his article, Blommaert (2009) makes an analogy for ethnography: Generally, when we watch a soccer match, our eyes are fixed on where the ball is being fought for. Automatically, our eyes only see the players who are around the ball, right? However, the reality on the field, even though it is not captured by the camera, is that players who are outside the camera's reach also carry out important activities, such as running movements, facial expressions, and even faces thinking about strategy. The movement of players who are not visible on camera is also important for the success of each team. Not only players, we also often escape the coach who directs his players from the side of the field. Obviously, the various activities on this soccer field are not linear. This means that it is not easy to predict the direction of the game and the activities of th
